Dog-Trekking around the "3 Cime di Lavaredo", the most famous peaks in the Dolomites
Our tour start from Auronzo shelter, which can be reached by car on a road with tollgate.
From Auronzo shelter (mt. 2330) an easy level path (101 signal) goes towards
Lavaredo shelter and "Forcella Lavaredo" (mt. 2454), going beyond
Alpines Chapel (about 15 minutes) and running alongside south side of "3
Cime di Lavaredo".
From here one can already have a scenic view: the North side of the "3
Cime di Lavaredo", Monte Paterno, an important Austrian emplacement
in the First World War, Croda Passaporto and so on. In about 40 minutes
we arrive at Locatelli shelter (40 minutes - 1hour and 40 from start).
Here we rest for a packed lunch or a lunch into the shelter.
He/she who likes it, can be accompanied at the start of "Gallery Path" of
M.te Paterno, max 1 hour to go and return.
After the rest we restart our trek, following the 105 signal, to go round
the north side of "3 Cime di Lavaredo": we descend in "Grava
Longa" to arrive then to "Forcella di Mezzo" on the west
side of "3 Cime di Lavaredo";
from here we arrive at our starting point, Auronzo shelter.
All this will take (rests excluded) about 3 hours and half with a difference in height
of about 300 mt.
Landscape description:
Already at the start the landscape is marvellous! We can see south side
of "3 Cime di Lavaredo", the "Cadini di Misurina" group
with the namesake lake and M.te Sorapiss overcoming it; and more, Fanes
group, Croda Rossa d'Ampezzo and Marmarole group. Walking toward Lavaredo
shelter we can admire the famous "Spigolo Giallo" (part of "Cima
Piccola di Lavaredo"). And then we'll see Croda Passaporto and M.te
Paterno, Torre dei Scarperi, Torre Toblino and Sasso di Sesto with Locatelli
shelter under it.
From Locatelli, looking at north side of "3 Cime di Lavaredo"
from left to right, we can see: Cima Piccolissima and Punta Frida (that
are part of Cima Piccola), Cima Piccola, Cima Grande, Cima Ovest, Sasso
di Landro and Torre Lavaredo. The "3 Cime", in the strict sense,
are 3 rocky "teeth" that are insulated from other mountains.
Very interesting are flora and fauna species: marmots, chamoises, foxes
and butterflies, ravens, rhododendron, Gentiana, Aconitum (very very poisonous!),
Saxifraga and so on.
As mentioned, this was a war area and one can see its leftovers; from Locatelli
shelter (reached in about 1 hour and half and where we will rest for lunch)
in a few minutes it is possible to see the war galleries of Monte Paterno.
Happy trek!
